Why Here?

In the mid-1930s, Moscow's old Khodynka Aerodrome was becoming heavily overloaded. The city desperately needed a new, modern alternative. In 1936, the Soviet government approved the construction plan. The location was chosen perfectly: a southwestern direction, proximity to the railway, and most importantly, the highest geographic point in the capital's suburbs (204 meters above sea level). Thanks to this elevation, the area is much less prone to fog.

Born in the Fire of War

The official grand opening was planned for later, but destiny had other plans. Vnukovo was launched ahead of schedule on July 2, 1941, just days after the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. Instead of civilian travelers, the apron was filled with military and transport aircraft. It was here, in May 1945, that the historic plane landed, delivering the Act of Unconditional Surrender of Germany and the Victory Banner that had flown over the Reichstag.

The Crossroads of Eras

Following the war, Vnukovo became the ultimate showcase for Soviet civil aviation:

• Aviation Pioneers: This was the starting ground for the maiden flights of legendary passenger airliners like the Tu-104, Il-18, and Tu-154.
• A Space-Age Welcome: On April 14, 1961, the airport erupted in cheers for Yuri Gagarin. A special flight from Baikonur brought the world’s first cosmonaut to Vnukovo, sparking a long-lasting tradition of welcoming space heroes right here.
• The Government Hub: The airport historically cemented its role as the primary gateway for official foreign delegations and heads of state from all over the globe.

Vnukovo Today: Faster, Higher, Smarter

Today, Vnukovo is an ultra-modern aviation complex that celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2026.

Its standout feature in the 21st century is its unmatched transport accessibility. In September 2023, Vnukovo became the first and only airport in Russia with its very own fully integrated metro station. Now, you can step off the subway car and walk directly into the futuristic Terminal A via an underground passage.
